Astron demonstrates second generation additively manufactured reusable rocket engine torch igniter
By Astron Systems
Astron has successfully demonstrated repeated and long duration firings of their second generation reusable rocket engine torch igniter, ready for integration in their upcoming rocket engine prototype.
This second generation igniter design, whilst looking deceptively simple from the outside, is additively manufactured with hidden internal geometry to both control the internal flame anchoring location to minimise unwanted soot build up, and to protect the walls from degradation. All whilst still delivering a hot enough and powerful enough pilot flame to the main rocket engine chamber to ensure successful ignition.
The same physical igniter, designed to work with methane and oxygen, has been fired repeatedly over 100 times including for long durations over 30 seconds and with significantly off nominal mixture ratios whilst showing no significant signs of wear or needing replacement of any parts. Astron believes this igniter represents the state of the art for robust reusable rocket engine ignition within Europe.
